Art Palace โ€“ Museum of Cultural History

A unique treasury of Georgian theatre, music, cinema and artistic heritage

Art Palace – the Museum of Cultural History of Georgia – is one of the country’s richest cultural repositories, preserving centuries of artistic heritage. The museum is located in one of Tbilisi’s most beautiful historical buildings, designed in the 19th century by architect Paul Stern, a rare example of Islamic Gothic architecture that gives the city a distinctive silhouette.

The museum’s collection holds more than 300,000 artifacts, offering extensive insight into the development of Georgian theatre, music, cinema, choreography, folk art, and the artists who shaped these fields. The earliest objects date back to the antique period, including an ancient mask discovered during archaeological excavations in Vani.

The manuscript and archival collections preserve materials by Ilia Chavchavadze, Akaki Tsereteli, Aleksandre Kazbegi, Aleksandre Akhmeteli, Kote Marjanishvili, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Feodor Chaliapin, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and others.
The museum houses personal archives of distinguished cultural figures such as Dimitri Arakishvili, Giorgi Eristavi, Mikheil Chiaureli, Zakaria Paliashvili and Vano Sarajishvili; handwritten plays; rare editions from the 17th–19th centuries; gramophone records; posters; theatre and film costumes; and unique photographic archives from films such as “Jim Shvante,” “Mamluk,” “Giorgi Saakadze” and more.

The fine arts collection includes Persian miniatures from the 16th–17th centuries, 18th-century French engravings, and masterpieces of Old Tbilisi painting.
Today, the museum continues the salon tradition of the 19th century by hosting literary evenings, educational programs, musical events, exhibitions, and gatherings of leading cultural figures.
