The history of Subway dates back to 1965, when 17-year-old Fred DeLuca borrowed $1,000 from a friend and opened his first restaurant in Bridgeport, Connecticut, under the name Pete’s Super Submarines. Fresh ingredients and delicious sandwiches quickly gained popularity.
In 1968, the restaurant was renamed Subway — the name it proudly carries today.
