A unique space of science, art, and heritage

The State Silk Museum, founded in 1887, is one of the oldest and most unique silk museums in the world. It serves as an important scientific, educational and cultural center, preserving the centuries-old history of sericulture and silk production.

The museum’s mission is to protect and research its collections, promote them through permanent and temporary exhibitions, and raise public awareness through diverse programs, workshops, lectures and conferences. The institution also conducts research on its collections and library materials to deepen knowledge in the field and support new publications and projects. Collaboration with contemporary artists and scholars helps the museum present new perspectives and interpretations.

Originally, the museum was part of the Caucasian Sericulture Station — a major research and educational hub founded by biologist Nikolay Shavrov, who developed the concept based on European models. The complex, located on the grounds of Mushtaid Garden, once included 23 different buildings, of which only the staff residence and the museum building survive today. Designed by Polish-Georgian architect Alexander Shimkevich, the museum’s eclectic architecture is especially notable for its interior — decorated with sculpted silk moths and ornamental details that emphasize the building’s historical purpose.

A full rehabilitation of the museum building was completed between 2020 and 2024, restoring its original character while adapting it to modern standards.
